Santiago de la Ribera is the most populated district of the municipality of San Javier in the Region of Murcia, Spain. It is located on the coast of the Mar Menor along a wide stretch of coastline. Traditionally it has included other smaller neighborhoods such as Ciudad del Aire, also called Colonia Julio Ruiz de Alda, Los Arcos, San Blas, Los Pozuelos, Los Garcías de Abajo and the Fishermen's Quarter. On the outskirts of the urban area is the General Air Academy (AGA) together with the Murcia-San Javier Airport (MJV). Santiago de la Ribera has 4 kilometres of fine golden sand beach, calm, temperate and shallow waters, which determines the enormous attraction it exerts on visitors who also have adequate infrastructure to meet the needs of holiday makers. Forming the Santiago ecosystem we have the following beaches:
Playa de Colón: It runs parallel to the seafront promenade that bears its name. This beach was of scarce sand, due to the characteristics of a sea with little waves, and stony in some areas due to the old drainages of ravines and torrents that were to end at the Mar Menor. The physiognomy of the Playa de Colón experienced a spectacular change in 1987, when the MOPU extensively regenerated the entire coastline with clean sands brought from the very bottom of the sea. Currently, it is a beach of fine golden sand, calm waters, with a length of 1000 m and 30 m width.
Playa Barnuevo: Located in the town center, between the General Air Academy and the old fishmongers, this beach has 400 m long and 30 m wide.
El Castillico Beach: Its 450 m long and 40 m wide, it is deployed between the Atalayón Garden and Lo Pagán.
El Pescador Beach: It is located in the urban area of the town, between the old fisheries and the Yacht Club. It is 280 m long and 20 m wide.
