Spanish Guitars Custom Made By You!
Playing the guitar is an amazing talent, but just think how incredible it would be if you could actually make one for yourself!?
Opportunity
Whether you have a burning interest in guitars, love music in general or simply enjoy making things, ALIS would like to share details of an exciting opportunity happening right here on the Costa Blanca! Three incredibly talented Musicians and Craftsmen are giving residents across the Province the chance to learn how to construct their very own Spanish guitar from scratch. As many of you will appreciate, the ancient art of guitar making is unique and an important part of Spanish culture often passed down through generations of families. Spaniards hold the tradition in very high esteem, and as Spain would not be the same without Flamenco, the Flamenco world would be incomplete without this beautiful instrument!
Talent
David, Hipolito and Antonio (Toni) each have a passion for guitar music, with a talent for playing the Classic, Flamenco and electric guitar. David’s family originated from La Mancha, with his Grandfather being a keen guitarist, and passing the skill on to a young David in 2001. However, the classic sound was not enough to satisfy his wild flair and his talents soon diversified to the more powerful electric guitar. David joined a Heavy Metal band called “Pink Gomera” and can still be seen performing various gigs on the local entertainment circuit. Toni was presented with his first Spanish guitar by his parents at the age of 13 years and began to learn to play under the supervision of local tutor, Paquito “el de las mondas”. Through his instruction he became a competent classic guitar player. He later became friends with members of a band who used to meet regularly at a park near his Orihuela home, and under their influence his interests quickly switched to heavy metal, and a passion for the electric guitar blossomed. As soon as Toni started work he began to put money aside to purchase his first electric guitar and amplifier, and thus commenced his career into the music world. He has worked alongside various bands as a Sound Technician, joining the touring crew for big names such as Operación Triunfo, Nuria Fergó and M-clan, as well as jamming at gigs with local bands around Alicante and Murcia. Toni and several of his close friends finally formed their own band called “El Falo de Vigo”, in which he continues to play around local venues.
Business Success
In 2006, Toni commenced constructing electric guitars under the trade name “NC Guitars”, and promoting them on popular guitar websites and forums. His reputation for making high quality and very intricate replica pieces, inspired by the work of some of Spain’s most famous guitar producers, spread rapidly across the country and into the European market. Toni established the now highly respected brand “Sampere Bañuls Guitarras Artesanas”, and it was this taste of success which eventually motivated him to expand his interests into the construction of classic and Flamenco guitar. He enrolled in a summer course, under the instruction of great Guitar Maestro, Rafael López Porras; before expanding his knowledge in 2015, during a more intense, yearlong course taught by Sebastián Melchor. It was at this time that he met his new work colleagues, David and Hipolito, and the trio hit it off instantly, enjoying the course so much that they decided it would be great if they could share their new found skills with like-minded others.
Course
The latest guitar construction course will commence at Toni’s workshop in Heredades, near Formentera, during September 2017; and will be aimed at teaching students how to make their own classic and Flamenco guitars, as well as giving precise instruction on how to restore or repair an antiquated instrument. The course is divided into three study modules:
1. Choosing the correct wood and other materials for the
type of guitar being produced.
2. Constructing molds for specific types of guitar.
3. Constructing a complete classic or Flamenco guitar of
your choosing.
David explained that “We are offering places to anyone who has an interest in guitars, and would like to develop the skills necessary to craft one of their very own. This might either be as a hobby, or could become the starting point of a very enterprising new business venture!” All materials and tools required to complete the course are provided, and each student is allowed to keep their finished article when they graduate. Then, should they wish to pursue their talents further, they will be equipped with the knowledge and expertise necessary to be able to select the correct materials and tools to produce their own unique brand. David said that learning is done at each student’s own pace, with flexible hours meaning that they can fit it in around work, childcare or other commitments. The course costs an all-inclusive fee of 2500€, and availability is currently limited to just five students, so early booking is advisable to guarantee a place.
